Hello there!
For my English Language Teaching class we had to make a brochure about giving feedback to peers. I got thinking and thought: I have quite some experience in giving feedback. And as someone who was never good with being critiqued myself, it would be nice to write down the things I learned and think are good to consider before giving feedback.
Own experience top 4
Before giving feedback think of this: feedback should
always be something that someone can work on. Also, when you give
feedback your state of mind should always be that they put in their
best effort. Lastly: ask permission to give feedback,
if they don’t value your opinion, it won’t be of much use.
1) Be honest
Always be honest when giving feedback. It doesn’t help
the other person to only be positive about everything they do. There is always
room for improvement.
2) Be kind
This of course coincides with being honest. If you
choose to be honest, choose to be kind as well. People never
believe this, but you van be honest and kind at the same time. Try it while
giving feedback.
3) Be helpful
Don’t just say: you need to be better at this and then
leave. Tell them your perspective on the matter. How do you think they can improve?
4) Open doors
When you are done with being honest, kind and helpful
in your feedback, try opening a door as a last step. This goes together with
being helpful. Look for opportunities to
help the other person improve their skills of weaker points.
I hope this is helpful for some of you and I hope to, of course, be applying these techniques, if you will, myself!
Less than three,
A teacher-to-be,
Hannah
