Proficiency: what I must improve and how I'm going to do this | Anneke Gall

Looking back at my first year I come the conclusion that I need to work on my vocabulary, listening and reading.

Vocabulary

Vocab 1.2 and 1.3 resulted in a 5. This means that I'm almost there, but still need to work on it daily.

  How I expand my vocabulary
- I'm already learning in advance for the vocab. 1.2 and 1.3 by learning 2 chapters of the book 'English Vocabulary in use' per week.
- I'm taking time to read the headlines of articles on the BBC news or the guardian app when I'm in the bus. Also, I'm reading at least 2 articles which I think are interesting and write down words I haven't mastered yet.
- I've started reading more English books and write down difficult words I encounter.  Subsequently, I write down its significant and study these ones in a while.
- By watching series with English subtitles. For example, Secrets of Great British Castles, Dr. Who and Stranger Things.

Listening
At the beginning of the first year I didn't know that this was going to be a problem, because in secondary school I got good grades on this part.

I figured that I panic ones the test starts, because I'm afraid that I will miss something important and fail the test. As a result, I did fail the test with a 5.

How I'm going to improve it
- watching series without subtitles
- listening to the BBC news
- Practicing listening by doing CPE tests. As a result, I hope to get used to the test and stop          panicking.

Reading

Mark year 1: 5

In secondary school we haven’t practiced with gap texts, multiple choice cloze, open and close word formation and key word transformations. Therefore, I need to catch up.

How I'm doing to catch up
- Practicing cpe tests on bb
- reading books
- reading articles
- Found a website called esl-lounge.com where I can practice the use of English part of the test.
- coursebook exercises
